I endorse this message.
When I first started playing eve, I trained the learning skills up first.... dedicated 1-1.5 months to training learning skills and goddamnitt was it friggen boring. I told friends to try EVE out and to "make sure you train your learning skills first" like everyone told me to do (being a n00b myself at the time, not realizing that for trial members, it's probably not the best choice if you want to turn someone ON to the game).
Well, most of them quit eve and didn't come back. Now - when I get ppl to try out EVE for the first time I just keep my mouth shut and let them train what they want and have fun. Saves me the hassle of explaining more **** to them (I'm explaining enough about the game as it is to them) , and the rate at which they are staying with EVE is much higher. Reason being, is they've already invested a month or so into the game, some more cash, know that they like it at this point and know they will be investing more time and money into it for a longer period of time. NOW they are specializing their learning skills (learning skills dont make a relatively HUGE difference in the low ranking skills early on anyways), while at the same time they can have some more fun flying in their battlecruisers et cetera.
I'll bet if everyone in eve decided to shut up about the learning skills and let the trial ppl just play through their trial period, learning the skills they need in order to get that cool ship or use those cool weapons or mine or whatever, then more people will be joining and staying with EVE - thus getting CCP more money, and thus having more labor and financial resources to bring about more updates/fixes for the game on much better time intervals (having even more people will also make the game more dynamic and IMO, even more fun).
Are doing all your learning skills up ASAP the msot efficient way going about learning all your skills throughout your whole EVE career? Yes, definitely. Is it worth the fun rating trade-off so early on in the game for a new player? In my opinion... HELLS NO.
